When walking into a gallery you're always welcomed by a happy face and the standard conversation, "yes I'm here to see so and so, and a ticket for one please", but the team behind pace gallery will always go the extra mile to make sure your stay is welcomed and one to remember. After a short introduction of what is presented at the gallery we were shown to the Joel Shapiro exhibition and all we can say was wow. When we were first introduced to his work a few weeks ago we didn't expect what would come. The sheer size of the sculptures that Joel has crafted was magnificent and that's a word we don't use often.
When we were first writing about the sculptures Joel Shapiro has created we wasn't sure the size of them, they could be the size of a small table or chair but when entering the gallery we were faced with a full scale model, human height and in some cases even bigger.
From the off set the room looks empty at first but by keeping a clear space between each sculpture gives the work life by captivating a continuous area to expand in a surreal space of solitude. Sounds overwhelming but it's so truly does when faced with the real thing.
The gallery has taken the temporary dull grey flooring away to reveal the original wooden flooring of the building which gives the room more colour and gives the sculptures a burst energy. Don't get me wrong, we love the monochrome look but when mixing colour and size it gives creates life with expression of the mind.
We will leave it here as we could go on about the work but we feel this is a must see event for anyone living or travelling to or from London over the next month.
Currently Joel's work is being displayed from May 19, 2017 – Jun 17, 2017
