You know us by now. Fans of that luxury stuff you get in nice smelling stores – lovers of our accessories that make us the chaps about town – big leather loving goons. That’s why we’re delighted to introduce you to some seriously sexy stuff from our friends at Opperman London. Handmade leather bags and wallets – they couldn’t be more up our street.
Combining the minimalist designs borne in the bleakness of Scandinavia with a modern London twist, these are practical and damn good looking products. So what makes them so good? Mattis and Niklas Opperman’s completely unique way of manufacturing – we’re a sucker for a completely unique way of manufacturing.
All of their bags are made in a little town just outside of Naples – an old-school set up where things are done in the proper way, with time-tested techniques. Though they go so much further.
The leather itself is vegetable tanned. Unlike most other leathers (about 95% of the products you see), they don’t use any filthy chemicals to get their materials into shape. Instead they take the long road, tanning in large wooden drums and using only natural ingredients such as bark and plant extracts. The result is a leather that is stunningly soft to touch, yet exceedingly durable and environmentally friendly.
Relying upon a strong architectural background, the strength of Opperman’s bags and wallets lies in their exacting eye for detail. Just look at that blueprint below. Everyone loves a good blue print.
Taking their time to source the best leather-workers, they’ve got some of the finest men and women around stitching their products together. And it really shows. There’s an exacting and delightful attention to each roll of the needle and they just feel proper.
So why are we writing about them? Well the brothers are launching a new range called ‘Black & Orange’. A time tested colour combination, the cooled lava outer layer is some of the finest leather we’ve seen, with the inner orange a warm, strong contrast.
Now, I know what you’re thinking. Those bags must come with a hefty price tag – but you’d be wrong. Well, slightly wrong.
Of course these products aren’t cheap – you’re paying for quality after all – but they’re not going to break the bank. One of the best things about these guys is that they don’t want to overcharge their customers, and have innovated the way they bring their products to the market to ensure you get a good deal. Cutting out the suppliers, who will invariably add massive markups, you can only buy the product directly from them, meaning that you walk away with a few extra pounds in your pocket. That’s a few extra gin and tonic’s down the pub, and then some.
