click here Summer might still be lingering in the air, but our minds are firmly facing the fact that it’s September. Falling leaves, a return to proper work and the start of the academic year. What a drag, right? We find that it’s a good idea to focus on nice things, and to have something to look forward to, or that Seasonal Affective Disorder might kick in early. “But what good is there?” – I hear you ask, your voice mottled with despair and the raspiness of chain smoking cigarettes. Well, new Jekyll & Hide bags for one…
Jekyll & Hide are a South African brand that caught our eyes a while back. There was something about their practical style that looked so smart and so distinguished, we just had to get in touch and find out more.
With designs coming out of their Cape Town studio, Jekyll & Hide bags are made from only the finest leather. Now this is a boast claimed by many leatherworkers, but Jekyll & Hide go all around the world in pursuit of the finest material, created by master craftsmen. That means trips to South America, Africa, Asia and Europe to find the perfect leather to suit each bag design. That’s a dedication to quality that you can respect.
Creating a whole selection of products, Jekyll & Hide bags are just one piece of the business. With a whole range that includes handbags, belts, leather jacks and other accessories, they’ve got your leather fetish covered. (ED Note: They don’t make fetish wear before you start getting ideas.)
The Jekyll & Hide Bags
So what can you expect from the new range of Jekyll & Hide’s bags? Let’s have a gander…
The southernmost tip of India, sweltering in tropical sun and gargling through tropical rain, is an agricultural heaven. Lathered in verdant green, it’s here, in North Arcot, that India’s finest leather is produced. With a tradition spanning back at least 3,000 years, you find master craftsmen using the same time-tested tanning technique taught by their forefathers.
Using wattle and mimosa to produce a rich, deep hue, the Oxford range are luxury bags. Designed for both travel and business, each product is imbued with a real touch of class. Our personal favourite has to be #3807 – the ultimate business bag. Easily accommodating a laptop and all the other accoutrements you may need, it’s a simple but subtle statement of professionalism.
Outside what Jekyll & Hide call their Mother City there’s a tannery that don’t stop. Ok, maybe it does, I don’t know. I’d assume they need sometime to sleep. But when they’re not, they produce some of the finest, oil-rich leather on the continent. Famed for its distinctive vintage finish soft touch, the leather is smooth-plated and hand-milled to give it that aged appearance.
Our Montana range is born to travel: to be with you as you learn and grow, to accompany you as you stretch your limits and foster an appreciation of new worlds.
Built to last, this could be your next travel companion for years to come…
No, not the music festival, but rather the up and coming neighbourhood in Cape Town’s suburbs. A district that has been the site of rejuvenation in recent years, it’s a place that boast new business and new culture. A stark difference from it’s stagnant past.
In reflection of this bright and exciting shift, the Woodstock has adopted this young and trendy look. Drawing on classic style, Jekyll & Hide have introduced a contemporary twist in design. In their own words:
…functional buckles contrast with a subdued matt finish, symbolising the emergence of a bright young star from a suburb rich in tradition.
The city itself is arguably the ideal symbiosis of business and culture. The capital of the country, it’s art scene is thriving more than anywhere else on the planet and banks are doing more business than ever before. And it’s in the same vein that the Jekyll & Hide Berlin bag was born.
This is the marriage of function and design; the pairing of practicality and personality. The backpack is a touch of class and far more spacious than you would imagine, and the travel bag is a perfect little weekend away number. Ideal for a jaunt to Paris or Port Isaac.
Whether it’s London or New York, SoHo is a place known for its exuberance and creativity. Vibrant areas that harbour some of the most exciting minds, the Soho bag is classic class and simple chic. An understated look, there is a sense of well mannered and high thinking personality to the piece. A perfect business bag, as well as a run around town.
Complete with brass knuckles and a soft, waxy finish, the hue is a rich, almost rouged brown. A colour that will catch the eye but not draw attention. Personally we love the holdall (#3633). The perfect shape and size for a couple of nights away, it’s the travel bag for the modern gentleman.
